This instruction rescinds In Orders 1998/24, Environmental policy.

Our organisation

The NSW Fire Brigades (NSWFB) is the NSW government agency responsible for urban and bushfire fighting, rescues, hazardous materials incidents, fire safety and prevention, bushfire hazard reduction, and public education. Our purpose is to enhance community safety, quality of life and confidence by minimising the impact of hazards and emergency incidents on the people, environment and economy of NSW.

Policy statement

The NSWFB is committed to the continual improvement of its environmental performance, recognising its obligations, both locally and globally, to the present and succeeding generations. We also aim to manage the activities over which we have control and which impact upon the environment in accordance with the principles of ecological sustainability. We will be guided by the following principles.

Principles

We will aim to:

*     be guided by an Environment Strategy and an Environmental Management System

*     incorporate environmental best practice into our operational and business services so that they are delivered through sustainable methods

*     recognise that protection of the environment is an organisation-wide priority

*     monitor the use of natural resources, both renewable and non-renewable, with the intent to maximise the efficiency and effectiveness with which they are used, and with a view to minimising environmental impacts

*     minimise pollution and degradation of air, water, land and biodiversity

*     minimise negative impacts to  the environment through efficient reduction, reuse and recycling

*     undertake regular monitoring and reporting on our environmental performance

*     comply with all relevant environmental legislation and regulations

*     review this policy every 12 months.

This policy statement confirms the NSWFB’s intent to create and implement sound environmental principles throughout the organisation and is available to all employees and to the public through our website and upon request.
