The Australian Fire Service Medal was established by Her Majesty the Queen in 1988 to recognise distinguished service by members of Australian fire services.
The Medal is part of the Australian Honours system. Recipients of this award are entitled to use the post-nominals AFSM.
In the Queen's Birthday Honours 2005, medals were awarded to the following members of the NSW Fire Brigades:

Position No: 720005. Head Office. Permanent full-time. Total remuneration package valued to $85,606 pa including salary ($70,397-$77,577), employer's contribution to superannuation and leave loading.
Duties: This position is responsible for coordinating the preparation of the Department's recurrent and capital budgets, forward estimates and State Budget Papers. Monitors, analyses and reports on trends and projections. Prepares Ministerial briefings and other significant reports and correspondence for internal and external use. Coordinates the preparation of the Fire District Estimates, and is the liaison officer responsible for providing financial advice to regions and other operating units.
Selection criteria: Knowledge and experience in accounting and financial management including reporting, preparation, maintenance and review of budgets in a service delivery organisation. High level written and oral communication skills. High level numeracy and well developed computer skills. Ability to prioritise work and meet deadlines and the capacity for innovation. Commitment to the concept of teamwork. Relevant tertiary qualifications with eligibility to a membership of a recognised accounting body. Common selection criteria also apply.
