The Australian Fire Service Medal was established by Her Majesty the Queen in 1988 to recognise distinguished service by members of Australian fire services.
The Medal is part of the Australian Honours system. Recipients of this award are entitled to use the post-nominals AFSM.
In the Australia Day Honours 2005, medals were awarded to the following members of the NSW Fire Brigades:

Regional OHS Advisor, Clerk 7/8, 3 positions
Position Nos: 740210, 740211, 740212. Locations: North Region (Artarmon); West Region (Harris Park); South Region (Greenacre). Some flexibility in work location may be negotiated, subject to operational/accommodation requirements. Permanent fulltime. Total remuneration package valued to $75,435 pa including salary ($61,757 - $68,360) employer’s contribution to superannuation and leave loading.
Duties: Provide OHS advice, support and information to local managers and other stakeholders. Monitor OHS performance, assist with audits and support planning and decision making and make recommendations for OHS performance management.
Selection criteria: Sound knowledge and experience in the practical application of OHS legislation, codes of practice and standards. Knowledge and experience in conducting workplace audits and accident investigations. Ability and/or experience in developing and implementing OHS risk management and conducting risk assessments. Well developed written, oral and interpersonal skills including presentation and training. Ability to work as a team member. Highly developed analytical and problem solving skills. Effective organisational skills. Sound use of computer software. Ability to travel throughout NSW. Common selection criteria also apply.

Duties: Supervise the administration of leave entitlements, conditions of employment and other employee services functions relating to firefighters, administrative and technical staff, and ensure that the NSW Fire Brigades’ administration procedures and practices are in accordance with the relevant legislation.
Selection criteria: Demonstrated high level knowledge of the administration of public sector staffing and leave matters and a comprehensive knowledge of public sector employment conditions. Demonstrated experience with a computerised human resources system. Excellent liaison and communications skills and the ability to build and maintain strong working relationships. Demonstrated supervisory and leadership skills. Ability to work as part of a multi disciplinary team and meet tight deadlines. Excellent numeracy, problem solving, analytical and spreadsheet (Excel) skills. Common selection criteria also apply.
Note: Secondment under Section 86 of the Public Sector Employment and Management Act 2002 for a period of up to 24 months.
